Gumwood  (Liquidambar styraciflua)

Southern Gum, Sweet Gum, American Sweetgum

Most of the commercial production for Gumwood is in the lower Mississippi Valley though it grows over a wide range of the United States. Red Gum or the heartwood is often selected for use in cabinetmaking, wooden dishes and architecture because of its pleasingly figured dark streaks. It is moderately heavy, hard, straight, and close-grained. Reasonably priced and locally available.
